Spirit Trained Mind For Overcomers

Text: 1 Corinthians 2: 14-16

Purpose: to stir up each believer to have a greater reliance on the Holy Spirit in us for bearing godly fruit in our character and to be trained continually in our minds

The Natural Man:

– ‘Anima’- basic, instinctive, passion led
– Worldly, sensual, little respect for spiritual
– Intellectually-able, self-reliant, morally incomplete
– Humanistic inclusiveness outwardly, at core selfish

Romans 1: 28-32 is a strong indictment of the natural man.

The Spiritual Man:
– ‘Animus’- higher inclination, reason, conscience
– Understands fallen nature, needs salvation
– Cherish grace and desire to live sacrificially
– Discerns the spiritual and shows fruit of the Spirit

James 3: 14-17, 1 Corinthians 2:12, 1 Corinthians 2:9 speaks of the wisdom of the Spirit man.

Things of the Spirit
Foolishness to the natural
Spiritually discerned by the spiritual
– the Cross (1 Cor 1:18)
– The Crucifixion (1 Cor 1: 23-24)
– Atonement, Justification, Sanctification
– Heaven and Eternity

The Gift of the Holy Spirit is something to be enjoyed and to be lived out
(John 14:16-17)

Overcomers work with the Holy Spirit to renew their minds daily. The tutor (advocate, adviser, counselor) trains via the Word and inner promptings on:

– Our true estimate of ourselves and our lives (Jeremiah 9:23-24)
– Our need to see the “big picture”- His view (Habakkuk 2: 2-4)

– His work vs our work: No contradictions (Matthew 6: 32-34)
– God may have a long term view vs our short term impatience (2 Peter 3:8)

– discern and accept your life purpose (Ephesians 2:10, Psalm 139:16)
– Live that purpose intentionally and effectively (1 Corinthians 9: 24-27)
– Endure to the end (Hebrews 12:1-2)

– we are spiritual (alive) people of God:
– Spirit-dwelt, Spirit-led and Spirit-powered
– His wisdom and discernment for life and daily challenges
– Renewed mind where victories first won
– Overcoming faith to believe
