Slaying The Goliaths in Our Lives
They are times where one thing which causes pain for us can destroy the whole of our lives.
A Goliath in our lives can cause us great pain in our lives. The anatomy of a Goliath is a circumstance or situation that looms over us and causes us pain which destroys us.
“And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.”
I Samuel 17:4 NKJV
When these Goliath’s appear, we often feel already defeated. It causes us to fear. Goliath seems to not leave and laughs and mocks the people of Israel.
How did David kill Goliath? It wasn’t just the slingshot. David had strategies that he used to defeat Goliath.
We need to apply these Scriptures to our lives to feel their power.
“Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.””
I Samuel 17:26, 36 NKJV
The word uncircumcised Philistine is repeated twice. This is important. Goliath was uncircumcised, which shifted David’s perspective on the battle.
1. We need a spiritual perspective of the problem. We need to understand the spiritual cause of the natural problems we face. David had a different perspective of the problem.
Circumcision is a sign of being in and under the covenant of God.
It meant that Goliath wasn’t under the covenant of God but David was.
It means a divinely ordained relationship with God.
For us, we are under the New Covenant of God and we are children of God and seated with Christ in the heavenly places.
Sometimes we can be in covenant but not operating in it. The goal of covenant is to be covered. It’s like using an umbrella when it rains.
When we operate under covenant, we don’t run from Goliath’s but we confront them. Like David, operating under the covenant we are on the offense, not defense.
“And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.””
2. In order to defeat the giants, we need to move. We do what is possible and God will do what is impossible.
“For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, And in a multitude of counselors there is safety.”
Proverbs 24:6 NKJV
“The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, And He will show them His covenant.”
Psalms 25:14 NKJV
3. We all need a spiritual strategy from the Lord.
There are rule books by which sports are played but a playbook is a book of strategies for victory in the game. Spending time with the Lord and in His Word gives us His divine playbook.
“Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”
I Samuel 17:45 NKJV
This declaration shifted the nature of the battle. God has a strategy for us and our battles. Like David, we identify God’s appropriate name for the given battle.
Like David killing Goliath, every high thing will come down and bow to us in defeat.
