Rekindle The Fire of Your First Love
God and the Holy Spirit wants us to come back to our first love.
““I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.”
Revelation 2:2-5 NKJV
The above passage is a reprimand from Jesus, a letter to the church in Ephesus. Jesus is always kind and encouraged them and commended them. Then He reprimanded them for losing their first love.
The church here seemed to be thriving, active and alive. Yet they had lost their first love. They were doing all of the things in the name of Jesus so what was the problem?
Jesus wasn’t looking at the external things. Jesus was looking and is still looking at out hearts. He wants a friendship and relationship with us more than anything we can do for Him.
In this Scripture, we are called to go back to the place where we experienced His love. To go back to the place we have fallen from.
We need to be reminded of His love and how we experienced this love and didn’t want to hold back anything from Him.
5 Different Kinds of Love of God
1. Agape love. Unconditional love and complete.
2. Sacrificial love. Jesus died on the Cross for our sake (John 3:16, 2 Corinthians 5:21)
3. Forgiving love. He freely forgave us. We loved with forgiveness and no offense. (Luke 23:34)
4. Transforming love. His transforming power through us in His love.
5. His generous love. He gave His love generously so we would be generous with that love to others, being His witnesses. (Acts 1:8, John 15:5)
That daily abiding presence with Him, abiding in His love is important to keep our hearts burning. (Luke 24:32)
We need to return to where we have fallen, repent and return to our First love. Experiencing the love of God.
We need a fresh encounter, a new desire and hunger for the Lord. Praying in the Spirit and fanning the fire of His first love to lay hold of all that it accessible in His first love.
We don’t need to be religious or striving. We just simply make time to be with Him. A desire that goes into a discipline to seek Him, that turns into a delight in Him and returning back to our first love. A love that then leads to first works.
Today is the day to return and experience His first love again.
Let’s take stock of our lives and return back to our first love and prepare for Jesus’ return.
